Santero Art -- Santeros (Saint makers) paint or carve images of saints. The retablo is a painting on a flat wooden panel while bulto refers to a three-dimensional carving of a saint. In the 1700’s, the tradition of the santero began to emerge in the small villages of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. The work of these early santeros is still present in churches throughout Northern New Mexico, providing inspiration for the sacred art of today. We carry the work of numerous santeros, including many award-wining Spanish Market artists.
