Luis Mora

Luis Mora-- "I was born in Guadalahara City, Jalisco, Mexico. My ancestors came from Spain at least four generations ago. I was not very remarkable in my notes but in drawing, modeling or anything I had to do with my hands, I was one of the best in the group."

Luis started an exporting business of arts and crafts from all over Mexico, and thought he’d try his hand at carving. He took the first two pieces to sell on his next visit to the U.S.A. and that was the beginning of his career as a santero.

He has carved over 150 large painted bultos using sabino, mahogany or cedar. This self-taught master artist has been carving for eight years. His pieces are rich in movement, color, delicacy and use of gold or silver leaf.

Mora has pieces in the permanent collections of the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, the Regis University, and the Smithsonian Institute.
